Hello F.Ave Family!
My name is Russ Thompson, Mr. Thompson, a.k.a, “Mr. T” and I am excited to be in my first year here at F.Ave and in the City Schools of Decatur system!
Originally from Florence Alabama, I moved to Georgia in 2008 and proudly call Georgia “home.” Since the 5th grade, music has been a huge part of my life and has helped shape the person I am today. I began playing the trumpet in 5th grade and participated in both chorus, and band, through my second year of college. As a sophomore in college, I made instrumental music my primary focus and decided to pursue a teaching career. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of North Alabama, a Masters in Education from Auburn University, and a Masters in Conducting from Georgia State University. I am currently in my 11th year of teaching and have spent the last 10 years of my teaching career at the high school and college levels. I have taught in Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky. I am a member of Georgia Music Educators Association, NAfME, American Band Director’s Association, and the National Band Association. From 2016-2018, I served as GMEADistrict VI Treasurer and have presented at the 2017 GMEA, the 2017 AMEA In-Service Conferences, and the 72nd Annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in December of 2018.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, cooking, grilling, reading, college football (WAR EAGLE!!!), working with high school bands, attending events around Metro-Atlanta, playing trumpet with The Black Sheep Ensemble, playing XBox with my son, watching my daughter play volleyball, and watching her perform with the Lakeside Independent Winter Guard.
My wife, Brooke, and I reside in McDonough, GA with our daughter, MaKayla -16, our son, Nicholas-8 and our German Shepard, Sadie-4.
